Positano - Day 6

Well 11 of us were picked up relatively early and were driven to Pompeii for a guided tour of the ruins. Thanks for the tip Vernon and Pam, as it was very well worth the €13 to understand what ruin was what!  We got caught in traffic on the way there, so our 4 hour trip was extended a little but we had a really good tour.  Our guide Monica was an archeologist and knew everything about everything, she was fabulous! It took over 200 years for the excavation to be carried out to reveal approx 180 acres of the city and there's still more to be done, but want to preserve that for future generations. Incredible! The engineering and planning that was carried out so so many years ago was ingenious and it's a bit of a reality check that all of this has been in place for ever and sometimes, we can't get it right this day and age!
Got back later than expected, and had to say goodbye to our little scooter. We've had a great few days on it and was really the way to see this place.  You'd think it was scary driving on the narrow roads, but honestly, it would be scarier driving one of their little cars around here! Very good drivers though and remarkably patient on these windy roads.
Had a bit of lunch in the centre then had a lazy afternoon and it was Karen and Micks 29th wedding anniversary today, same day as my parents, so they had a lovely romantic  beach lunch. We all headed out to a local Taverna for dinner which delivered more amazing food and vino! Having a wonderful time - busy, but great.

What I look at here in Positano doing this blog of a morning - sigh!

  1. Well, you are doing a fantastic job on the blog...we can't keep up!!! So glad you enjoyed Pompeii, an amazing place with history frozen in ash and lava. With clay pipes THAT old you'd think drainers were the oldest profession in the world!!?? Maybe they do the same job and charge for the extras, as long as there is a happy ending!!! Good to see you are sampling plenty of the food and drink, I'm sure the Italians will miss you terribly when it's time to leave. Enjoy yourselves and keep the blog going, we are loving it. Love Pam and Vernon

  2. So glad you're enjoying reading the blog. I must say it hasn't been that easy at times, but will again be glad I persevered in the end.
Waiting in Rome airport now ready to board for London then on to Johannasburg. This leg will be totally opposite to what we've just experience I'm sure. Hope all is well back home.
    Love Deb and John xx

  3. So you have your own centurion soldier too. Great. What amazing history in Pompeii. I can't believe you got to see some of the previous residents. Sombre.
